Meet Coco Newton

I am a Registered Dietitian (RD), a Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN), and the owner of Lifetime Nutrition, LLC. a private practice in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan.

I began my career as a Public Health Nutritionist, focusing on maternal, infant, and child nutrition with the Women Infant Children (WIC) supplemental feeding program. I have worked in hospitals, as a clinical dietitian, specializing in critical care and the use of tube feedings and intravenous nutrition support. This is where my interest began in understanding the metabolic management of critically ill patients. I have been in private practice for the past 23 years, during which time there have been many changes in the knowledge, science, and priority of nutrition in health care.

As a Registered Dietitian, I have a traditional foundation in foods and nutrition that utilizes a more standardized dietary approach to disease. Yet, the science of nutrition has advanced rapidly, and nutrition is recognized as a crucial factor in disease prevention and intervention. In 2000, I recognized that my dietetic training and years of experience were not sufficient to help patients at a more sophisticated biochemical level. Therefore, I pursued advanced training in functional medicine and became a Certified Clinical Nutritionist.

Functional medicine is individualized and targets underlying causes of metabolic imbalances or dysfunctions. Sometimes functional metabolic testing (saliva, stool, blood, urine, genetic) is used as part of the nutrition assessment to help determine underlying causes of health problems, and for monitoring progress of the nutrition care plan.

Functional medicine provides a straightforward and science-based framework for applying therapeutic nutrition. This is not about only suppressing symptoms, but rather, addressing causes to help return patients to their natural state of optimal well-being. Nutrition therapy may include dietary modifications and supplements such as: vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, fiber, herbs, enzymes, probiotics, phytonutrients, and medical foods.
